BBD in Georgia

The Urban Bruiser

The Urban Bruiser

We moved here last year to the great state of Georgia with high expectations and we have not been disappointed. However, those expectations were not focused towards the opportunity of harvesting any real mature whitetail deer. We have had a great time spotting and hunting deer here in Georgia with low exceptions of seeing any really big deer. That was until we spotted a really mature buck within the urban area that we live. We did our homework of the terrain and what appeared to be his travel patterns. As the sun began to set last Monday night the distinct sound of a “pop” that can only be made from a large presence brought me to full attention. There directly behind me was a very nice 9-point along with a very large 6 point. I must say it was a pleasant surprise to see a 5 yr old plus living with the urban sitting of North Georgia. I got a closer look at this deer and was able to see the mass and maturity that this deer offered. It wasn’t long after getting a better look that I decided to seal the deal with a 20-yard shot. To my surprise he was the largest six point “mature” deer I have ever shot. Now more than ever I hold to the formula to produce trophy deer: Genetics, Nutrition and Proper Management. That’s why we continue to support organizations like QDMA and others that are allowing us to pass this experience from our generation to the next – peace

Open Season

I am so glad Deer season is finally here. It has been a long summer and hot one to say the least. However, Season has opened and it is very exciting to predict and dream about the upcoming opportunities. We will be hunting in Georgia, Kentucky, Alabama and Missouri this year. Beginning with Bow hunting in Georgia, Muzzleloader in Kentucky and Rifle hunting in both Alabama and Missouri. As season begins I thought I would leave you with some tips to help you score a trophy:

1. Scout, scout, scout…. then scout some more!
2. Make sure you take your time for stand placement.
3. Insure you have not only practiced, but practice perfect technique.
4. Be Patient and persistent. Believe in your homework and plan.
5. Finally, make sure you have blocked out as much time as you can. The concept here is to insure greater success you need to hunt more.
Keep Shooting – Peace

Character Comes Before the Shot

Recently I was in a pro-shop here in the Atlanta area when I overheard a man speaking of his desire for deer season. He went on to share a story about killing a deer last year. There was a particular part of the story that was very interesting to me. It was the part that he shared concerning the fact he didn’t know it was actually a buck until he walked up on it after he shot it. You might ask “were the horns to small, was it in some brush,” etc. NO….he said it was to dark for him to see.

After hearing his story I must say the first thing I wanted to know is where he hunts and to make sure I am miles away from this man. Then I began to think about what type of individual shoots a deer in such low light. He took several risks: not only being unable to clearly identify a deer, let alone who might have been behind the deer when he took his shot.

As sportsman/woman, we have a duty to not only abide by the rules and regulations that have been set forth for our safety, but to insure we conduct ourselves as model leaders. We make a statement to our community and children the way we conduct ourselves in our homes, business and afield. So, the next time you are out ask yourself what your hunting or fishing habits say about you and your character.

“Rain” Deer and Ice Cream

I have been in Kentucky the past few day’s putting out some trail cameras and using this time to glass some summer bucks. It has rained so much and the ground is saturated. I told my son “if it didn’t stop we would have to hunt “rain” deer this fall”. This is the time of year to work hard. Specifically in your food plots, trail cameras and using your spotting scope. It is also a great time to get the whole family involved. If you have little ones like my wife and I, it’s great to get them outdoors and become a part of putting food on the table in the fall. It’s also a great time to simply spend some one on one time with them. I would also encourage you to make it fun. For example, my family and I make it a game who can spot deer the fastest and the most. The winner gets to choose what’s for desert. There is nothing that says more about our passion for hunting than a chocolate sundae. So, gear up by getting your family involved with putting bone on the ground this fall.

DAD can we go…..

The family and I were recently at Lake Lanier Beach. It is a beautiful beach here in North Georgia with plenty of cool places to hang out and enjoy the lake. We had a great time chillin and playing some games along with getting a little burnt as well. However, the cool thing for me wasn’t the water, the games or even getting attacked by my daughter with a giant inflatable seahorse. It was actually when we were leaving the beach. As we were traveling out of the main entrance we spotted a beautiful mature doe. There she was in all her beauty staring right at us. Then I heard it, “Dad when are we going to go hunting”. Sooooo cool to hear my 5 yr old along with my 6 yr old daughter exciting about hunting. Maybe it is due to the fact that we speak about hunting, fishing and the outdoors on a regular basis or perhaps its something internal in which they were born. Maybe it’s simply introducing them to our sport and heritage. Regardless, of the reason it was a Kodak moment (FYI..that’s a camera for all you IPHONE generation people) and one I won’t forget. – peace

After months of hard work in the field and in the edit rooms, Monster Bucks XVII is finally done and ready to roll!

We’re really excited about all of the bowhunts this year and I’m especially fond of the new format of the archery shoot. Check out some of the previous posts for some insight into the new style. I promise you will laugh your head off at some of the scenes.

I look forward to hearing what you have to say about the new videos, so please post your comments on the blog.
